The Cure’s Robert Smith On Scott Hutchison: ‘It’s Awful’

The band was tapped to play the Smith-curated Meltdown Festival, which kicks off on Friday (June 15).

Robert Smith was excited to book Frightened Rabbit for his upcoming Meltdown Festival, which kicks off this Friday (June 15) with a stellar line-up featuring Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, The Deftones, Manic Street Preachers, Mogwai, Placebo, The Psychedelic Furs, Death Cab For Cutie and many more. But following the suspected suicide of Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison last month, the Cure singer is speaking out about his grief and disappointment at not sharing the stage with Huthison.

“It’s awful. They were one of the bands that I was really, really looking forward to seeing,” Smith told Time Out London in a June 11 interview. “I’ve been listening to them for ten years. I’ve never met him, but I feel I know him because of his voice.” Frightened Rabbit were one of the dozen-plus bands that were handpicked by Smith to play the 25th edition of the UK’s longest-running artist-curated music festival. The event kicks off on Friday at the Southbank Centre.

Hutchison, 36, was found dead last month after going missing on May 9.
