But how difficult will it be?
Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to strengthen in two key areas this summer. The Norwegian is set to be handed significant funds to invest in his squad as he looks to rebuild at Old Trafford.United look set to miss out on the top four and Solskjaer could be forced to downgrade some of his transfer targets for those willing to miss out on a season of Champions League football.Nevertheless, the Red Devils still retain the financial muscle to compete with any club in the world and Berbatov believes Solskjaer should focus his efforts on signing a centre-back and a midfielder.
‘No disrespect to the players, they are good players to play for Manchester United but I think they need players at the back,’ Berbatov told Metro.co.uk. ‘It’s up to Ole to decide how many he needs and what type of defenders he brings in but a centre-back is needed. They have issues there. ‘They need someone who can bring the ball out, to give it to Pogba. Not someone who just kicks it and makes the forward players fight for the second ball. ‘I also think midfield – between the defence and Pogba.’
Berbatov signed for United in 2008 after they were crowned Premier League and Champions League winners the previous season. The Bulgarian was added to a star-studded attack that already included Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the 38-year-old believes United already have enough quality in attacking areas and that their performances of late are simply down to a lack of confidence.
‘In attack Rashford, Martial, even Lukaku, these guys have the quality,’ said Berbatov. ‘The world has changed now, even if you don’t want to see something you’ll see it – on Instagram, social media, somebody swearing at you – you’ll see it. ‘You cannot escape it. Even if you’re mentally strong you cannot escape it. You can work with a psychologist or whatever you can do to help but you will still see it.’
