An unidentified man trespassed in Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s New York City district office on Saturday and, when police arrived at the scene, sprayed a fire extinguisher and attempted to hide in a utility closet, police said.

“It doesn’t seem to be a break-in. It seems to be a trespass,” said George Tsourovakas, a spokesman for the New York City police department. “Upon our arrival, he ended up discharging a fire extinguisher, which caused a cloud condition,” and then “retreated into a utility closet.”

The incident occurred at about 4:40 on Saturday afternoon. The man, who is 27, was taken into custody, the spokesman said.

The local ABC affiliate, ABC7, reported that no one else was at the Queens district office at the time.

The first-term Democratic congresswoman has emerged as one of the best known lawmakers in Washington for her embrace of progressive causes and her deft use of social media.

Ocasio-Cortez was in Washington on Saturday and she is due to appear on ABC News’ “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday morning.
