According to the reports by Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton are interested in signing Inter Milan’s midfielder Matias Vecino. Milan meanwhile have offered Vecino to Tottenham to engineer a move for Christian Eriksen. So it remains to be seen whether Vecino would be involved in that deal or not.
Carlo Ancelotti would hope that Vecino isn’t transferred to Spurs as he seemingly likes the player. Ancelotti in his time with Napoli has seen Vecino from close quarters as an opponent, and he likes the qualities which the Uruguayan midfielder would bring at the Goodison Park.
The 28-year-old is a 41 time international for his country. The midfielder moved to Inter Milan in 2017 after impressing for Fiorentina. His current contract will keep him at the club until 2022. Vecino has so far made 17 appearances in all competitions this season. With Milan trying to offer Vecino to Spurs, it seems like Conte is open to selling Vecino. Hence, Everton might have a chance to sign the midfielder if he doesn’t go on to join Tottenham.
Why Everton need a midfielder?
Everton have struggled to control and win the midfield battle for most parts this season. A lengthy injury to Andre Gomes and below-par performances from the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fabin Delph haven’t helped their cause. The club are in desperate need of an aggressive midfielder who can showcase good technical ability on the ball.
Can Vecino be that man for the Toffees?
The 28-year-old can either play as a defensive midfielder or in a box to box role. Vecino is known for his tenacity and commitment in the middle. The Uruguayan national team is full of grinders and players who give their all on the pitch and Vecino is just like that.
The midfielder is also known for his technical ability and dribbling skills as he can get out of tight spaces. However, he hasn’t been in the best of form this season, and that’s why he hasn’t been able to get a regular foothold in Conte’s first team. He has misplaced passes and given away possession cheaply on some occasions this season, and that is probably why Milan are willing to send him away this month.
As for Everton, they can do with a player like Vecino in the roster. Whether he would be able to adapt to the Premier League and deliver week in week out remains to be seen. The Serie A man seems to have raw ingredients to thrive here, but he has been out of form this season. So it probably comes down to what Ancelotti would think of him and whether he would be able to get the best out of him or not. We believe that the midfielder is worth going after.
