Canadian singer Neil Young granted US citizenship

Canadian singer Neil Young is ready to vote in the 2020 US election.

Young, 74, was photographed on Wednesday in Los Angeles flashing his brand new citizenship paperwork and waving a small American flag alongside his wife, American actress Daryl Hannah.

“I’m happy to report I’m in!!” he wrote on his website on Wednesday, urging fans to “vote their conscience.”

In November, Young announced he was trying to obtain dual citizenship so he can vote in the 2020 election. However, he revealed his pot-smoking held up the process.

“When I recently applied for American citizenship, I passed the test. It was a conversation where I was asked many questions. I answered them truthfully and passed,” he wrote on his site at the time. “Recently however, I have been told that I must do another test, due to my use of marijuana and how some people who smoke it have exhibited a problem.”

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services told CNN at the time, “Individuals who commit federal controlled substance violations face potential immigration consequences under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which applies to all foreign nationals regardless of the state or jurisdiction in which they reside.” The agency wouldn’t comment specifically on Young’s application.

Young and Hannah, 59 — who wed in 2018 — looked giddy as they came down an escalator at the Convention Center in LA after his naturalization ceremony.
