Local media reports that “The American flag lying next to the victim was brand new and witnesses told investigators Toney showed up for work that day with a backpack, which is very unusual for him, the affidavit said.”

The suspect, Mason Toney, was taken into custody Monday by Orange County Sheriff officials.

“Deputies said they were called around 10:30 a.m. after people called 911 and said Toney had killed their boss along the Turnpike, near State Road 528,” as reported on Wesh. The report continues, “When deputies arrived, they found Knight’s body lying next to an excavator with a brand-new American flag thrown on the side of him, an arrest affidavit said.”

The altercation began over a politically charged debate as the men traveled with their fellow coworkers from one construction site to the next.

The affidavit details the escalation from when boss, William Steven Knight, picked up Toney as usual, through to when they began to argue about the government.

The witnesses told investigators that Knight was a “proud and outspoken American and is pro-Donald Trump. They stated that the suspect is anti-government and very outspoken about his beliefs that the government is bad and out to get him,” the affidavit said.

After having bickered during their ride to work, the men dispersed to work, but the argument between Knight and Toney escalated. Soon, please could be heard from Knight as he screamed for his life.

According to the affidavit witnesses ran over towards the screams and witnessed the stabbing. When the witnesses tried to pull Toney off Knight, Toney began to advance towards these men with the weapon he had been using to stab Knight, then proceeded to flee the scene in a truck.

According to Kights family, Toney had been a friend of the family for some time.

“He was a friend of the family. My son went to elementary school with him and to middle school and high school,” William Knight’s father said.
