Trump’s lapdog Attorney General William Barr says that he will heed a call from the House Judiciary Committee to testify in March in regards to widespread growing concerns that, working at the president’s behest, he interfered in the criminal proceedings against Trump ally Roger Stone. Democrats on the committee have released a letter explaining the rationale behind the hearing.
“In the interest of transparency, we wish to be candid about one set of concerns we plan to address at the hearing. Since President Trump took office, we have repeatedly warned you and your predecessors that the misuse of our criminal justice system for political purposes is both dangerous to our democracy and unacceptable to the House Judiciary Committee,” the letter reads.
It explicitly mentions several concerns about Barr’s behavior, including his decision to overrule DOJ prosecutors to “significantly reduce the recommended sentence for Roger Stone” a move which the committee adds appears to have been made “at the apparent request of the President.” It was this decision that prompted four prosecutors who tried Stone to withdraw from the case in a sign of collective protest after the Justice Department backtracked on its original sentencing of Stone following Trump’s complaints about fairness.
It’s clear that—emboldened by the Republican Party’s cowardly decision to acquit him during his impeachment trial despite mountains of evidence proving guilt—Trump is now practicing corruption right out in the open.
It should go without saying that a president should not exploit his powers over the Justice Department to lessen the sentence of an ally found guilty of lying under oath. It makes an utter mockery of not just our legal system, but of democracy itself. Increasingly, it seems that Trump views himself not as a president but as a monarch.
Earlier today, Trump flaunted his lawlessness by tweeting out congratulations to Barr for “taking charge” of the Stone case, falsely claiming that it was “out of control” before devolving into some of his rote and repeatedly debunked conspiracy claims about the Robert Mueller probe.
Congratulations to Attorney General Bill Barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought. Evidence now clearly shows that the Mueller Scam was improperly brought & tainted. Even Bob Mueller lied to Congress!
It remains to be seen what Barr will tell Congress but at this point it’s grievously apparent that he is a disgrace to the office of the Attorney General. He sees his job as serving and protecting Trump instead of upholding the law of the land and he must be held accountable.
