We continue to cover our baby president’s first teething experience, that first little bit of “pain” he’s suffered as president because Obama was nice enough to leave the country in such great shape. Trump is now forced to address “something serious” and we’ve spent three years shaking at the thought of what he would do in a crises. The nation faces a serious public health and economic threat from the Coronavirus.
So David Axlerod, one of the top dogs on the Obama political team, has had enough of this, and let fly:
“Are you kidding me?!?” Axelrod wrote in response. “At a time when HIS OWN public health experts just warned of the likelihood of a significant outbreak here, he Tweets THIS?”
Well of course he did.
Going against the federal government – the same one he leads – is not at all unique for Trump, David. It’s just that this time he’s doing it with something that kills people. I suppose it was always just a matter of time. One cannot be president and not have people’s lives riding on decisions made and policy.
It looks like Axlerod has been reading us here, as we have also pointed out for weeks, the job of POTUS isn’t to protect himself, which must sound radical to the Trump administration:
Are you kidding me?!? At a time when HIS OWN public health experts just warned of the likelihood of a significant outbreak here, he Tweets THIS? The job of @POTUS is to protect the American people. Not to protect HIMSELF from a difficult challenge by denying it exists! https://t.co/5eKnZcj8QH

It is shocking (all things relative, it is hard for Trump to shock us nowadays) that Trump can get away with castigating this as all about himself and there doesn’t seem to be anyone left at the White House who can walk up to him and say: “You are beginning to sound ridiculous, stop …”
Then again, we have known for some time that Trump spent the first three years of his presidency getting rid of all the adults in the room. He is truly unchained, and we have a window into his airy head. He does believe that all of this is about him.
And he doesn’t care about you.
