Is it me or is Commando (1985) a really by the numbers Schwarzenegger movie? I’m not saying it’s bad (literally just did a write up about how much fun it is), but it often feels pretty stock/generic. What do you guys think?

  1. I think it’s ok to be by the numbers when you’re creating the numbers.

This is pretty much the blueprint for Arnie’s films to follow. His prior work isn’t especially in this vein. He had Terminator and Conan, neither of which really fit that mold.

  2. It does play with a lot of those action movie conventions, but obviously intentional. This one is almost a comedy, as became common with some of Schwarzenegger’s 80s and 90s movies. Even Predator plays in this playground, but ultimately plays itself straight. The humor is mostly in the first act.

On the other hand, casting Rae Chong in the female lead role seemed ahead of its time.

  3. Steven E. de Souza (screenwriter) had spent the previous decade working in the salt mines of television production cranking out dozens of teleplays for The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, The Hardy Boys, Knight Rider, and The Powers of Matthew Star.

So he certainly knew how to hit all of the marks that needed hitting. He also wrote Die Hard – so you never know what’s going to become movie history and what’s going to land in the dustbin of 80s action movies.

But like you said – a very fun film.

  4. There’s a lot of comedic pun lines in an action movie which was a bit new at the time. I think ultimately it led to Arnold doing other roles in comedy like Twins, kindergarten cop etc.

“Don’t wake my friend he’s dead tired.”

“What did you do with Sully?”

    “I let him go.”

    “Let off some steam Benett!”

  5. A lot of his 80s action films were so similar at 2nd glance. Same plots just diff characters. But he acted well and he was the star so im not hating. But i do agree OP

  6. No shit. You mean you figured out the one thing that is constantly pointed out about this movie! Someone get this guy on Cinema on Cinema
