I can’t speak for the others, but I personally have visited the West Olive 16 numerous times. It’s sandwiched relatively close between two other AMC’s (plus a few theaters from another chain). To distinguish it, they converted it into a full-service dine-in AMC in 2014.
And it started hemorrhaging money. I had friends that worked there and told me horror stories. They didn’t hire or train enough real chefs. One friend told me by the end, they didn’t have any trained chefs at all. It was all either Sysco frozen appetizers or Applebee’s-grade vacuum seal food, anyways.
But even if the food was good, it was such a bungled execution. Even if you didn’t buy anything, you had to pay a premium upgrade cost just to see the movies. And I, like a bunch of other people, didn’t want to pay. We just went to the Creve Coeur 12 up the street or the Chesterfield 14 down the street.
Those that did stick around didn’t want to buy the expensive food. And those that didn’t were upset with those that did, complaining about by the sounds of silverware and plates throughout the show.
What’s worse, while something like four screens were 21+, the rest required an 18+ guardian. So teenagers, the demographic with the highest percentage of disposable income, were completely written off. Who looks at a business model and decides “things would be better if we had less customers?”
Eventually, the theater suspended food service during the week and only had the full menu available on the weekend. Which is kinda like owning a car wash but not turning on the brushes. Yeah the water and the soap will kinda get the car clean, but that’s not what we’re here for.
Between all the money spent on the refurbishment, all the turnover, the reduced attendance, and the bad press, it’s no surprise in the slightest it’s being shut down.
Next month’s headline: Disney purchases six former AMC locations.
