Gary Neville thinks that Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are the only two Manchester United players that would get into Liverpool’s starting XI.

United started the season with four wins and a draw from their opening five Premier League matches, but have since won just one of their last five games in all competitions, including a disappointing 4-2 defeat away to Leicester on Saturday.

Under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his team can bounce back from the recent performances when his side takes on Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday, before a crucial Premier League encounter against second-placed Liverpool on Sunday.

Looking ahead to the weekend’s game at Old Trafford, Neville was asked to pick his combined XI consisting of Liverpool and United players.

The former Premier League right-back opted for Alisson Becker over David de Gea in goal, while also selecting Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk in defence.

However, Neville did include United captain Maguire, who returned from a month-long injury layoff during Saturday’s defeat to the Foxes, in his team.

The 46-year-old pundit overlooked United’s midfield stars Paul Pogba, Fred and Scott McTominay and instead opted for Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, while also choosing Roberto Firmino over Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position.

The in-form Mohamed Salah, who has already scored seven goals in eight Premier League matches so far this season, was Neville’s choice on the right wing, with Sadio Mane picked on the opposite flank.

Ronaldo was the second United player to be selected in the side, despite the Portugal international scoring just one goal in his last four games.

When questioned why Ronaldo was selected as the striker ahead of Firmino, allowing Fernandes to play in behind the Brazilian, Neville said: ‘It wasn’t easy but the idea that he’s one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, with Salah and Mane I thought he should be up front in the two teams and I think you would want him up front.

‘Ultimately with Fabinho and Henderson behind Firmino and those two wide, he’ll be absolutely devastating up front.’
