Carmelo Anthony Gets the Yips In First Game with LeBron

Carmelo Anthony is a future basketball Hall-of-Famer, but now in his 19th NBA season, the former superstar proved he’s capable of having a senior moment.

Tuesday night was Anthony’s first game as a Los Angeles Laker, his first as LeBron’s teammate, and he delivered with the worst free throw attempt of his career. Late in the third quarter, Anthony went to the charity stripe and knocked down his first free throw with ease.

For his second attempt, Anthony crouched down in his shooting stance, leaned forward, extended his elbows and brutally forgot to let go of the ball. A clear case of the yips for the 37-year-old forward, leaving the rest of the players on the court stunned and confused. Anthony looked to the official and quickly returned to his shooting stance, hoping for a do over, but he wouldn’t get one.

“What happened right there?” NBA on TNT analyst Reggie Miller asked. “I think that’s gonna be a violation! What was Carmelo thinking? I don’t even think he knew what he was doing!”

Broadcast partner and play-by-play voice Kevin Harlan laughed along, blaming he gaffe on it being “opening night.”

It was a violation on Anthony, showing up in the box score as a missed free throw. The hilarious blunder wasn’t a first in the NBA, with Markelle Fultz most recently having an odd hitch and Chuck Hayes dealing with similar yips throughout his career.
