Wes Brown has backed Manchester United to beat Liverpool ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford and hailed ‘very special’ Mason Greenwood.

Liverpool will hope to apply more pressure on league leaders Chelsea and continue their impressive start to the season on Sunday when they travel to the Theatre of Dreams to face inconsistent United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have gone three league games without a win and were 2-0 down against Atalanta on Wednesday night, before the Red Devils produced a fantastic second-half comeback to win the Champions League clash.

The night before, Liverpool showed their class with a 3-2 victory over La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, with Mohamed Salah continuing his sensational form with his 12th goal of the season.

The form table suggests Manchester United will be up against it in their home clash with Liverpool but Brown has backed his former club to secure a narrow win over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

‘Liverpool are a brilliant team and Mo Salah is up there with the very best,’ five-time Premier League winner Brown told 888sport.

Manchester United are going to have to be on it but what’s true of this fixture is that it doesn’t really matter who is on top when this game comes around.

‘When I played, we were always ahead of Liverpool in the league but that didn’t necessarily mean we would win.

‘Everyone steps up and we will have to play very well to stop that front three regardless.

‘Liverpool are in good form and good shape mentally and they will be looking to win the game. With the counter attacking players that we have we can take advantage of that. I’m going 1-0 Man Utd.’

England international Greenwood scored a superb goal in Manchester United’s 4-2 defeat to Leicester City last weekend and began the season with three goals in three matches.

On the Red Devils academy graduate, Brown added: ‘Mason Greenwood has impressed and surprised me.

‘We always knew he was very special as a kid but when you take that step up, it’s different. The mentality that he shows when he’s on the pitch is brilliant.

‘He knows he has great skills and ability but still, he’s making it look easy by scoring and taking people on.

‘He has shown a lot of maturity and for me, he stands out. He is a player who can do stuff on his own and he’s a bit different.

‘Coming through the youth team he was never afraid to shoot with both feet and he had great power and consistency. He hits the target more than not.

‘Sometimes it can be difficult to move into the first team and still show that confidence and ability, but he does it with ease. His natural ability is up there with the best.’
