LIRR train smashes into Hyundai and injures driver
A Long Island Rail Road train plowed into a car and injured a driver who appeared to have intentionally stopped on the tracks in Long Island Tuesday morning, officials and sources said.
The Hyundai Sonata was struck around 10:30 a.m. in Bayport by the westbound 10:22 a.m. train from Patchogue to Babylon, officials said.
Rescue crews used tools to remove the roof and free the pinned driver, photos show. The man, who was not immediately identified, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, officials on the scene said.
A source familiar with the investigation said the driver appears to have intentionally maneuvered around the gates and stopped on the tracks.
