Trump Begs Appeals Court To Quickly Block Congress From Accessing January 6th Evidence

Donald Trump is showing signs of increasing desperation to keep evidence regarding his role in the January 6th attack on Congress. After giving the judge an ultimatum failed, and a judge ruled that the documents requested are within the scope of Congress’ legal powers, he’s now begging an appeals court to come through for him.

Politico reporter Kyle Cheney shared a portion of the filing, showing that Trump genuinely expects the court to move quickly in his favor: he plans to file for an injunction on Friday, and has set a quick schedule for further filings in the case.

In his previous filing, he informed Judge Tanya Chutkan that he was prepared to file with the appeals court quickly if she failed to move on his request to block Congress’ access to documents in the National Archives before Thursday. Friday is a major deadline for Trump, as it’s the date that the National Archives are due to hand over information to Congress, including White House visitor logs and phone records that they believe could demonstrate whether Trump was in on advance plans for the rally to turn into a riot.

It’s not the only effort underway by Trump and those around him to sabotage the investigation. The Congressional Committee has asked the U.S. Justice Department to take action in the case of Steve Bannon, who ignored a subpoena to testify before the Committee about his and Trump’s roles in the attack.

The Committee has also subpoenaed a long list of Trump advisors and allies, though it remains to be seen how many will follow Bannon’s example and ignore the order to appear, especially if the Department of Justice continues to delay action on Bannon’s case.
