After Previously Condemning Trump’s Bans, Biden Admin Plans to Ban Travel From 8 African Nations Over New COVID Variant

The Biden administration reached a new level of hypocrisy today by responding to news of a new COVID variant by banning travel to 8 African nations, effective Monday.

Breaking911 reported:

“BREAKING: Biden Administration to ban travel from South Africa, 7 other African nations by non-US citizens beginning Monday due to COVID-19 variant – AP”

Twitter user “Conor McTether” responded to the news by sharing a compilation of headlines that were shared when then-President Donald Trump moved to ban travel last year when the original outbreak was beginning.

Fox News reported on past statements made by both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris condemning bans from Trump.

Biden tweeted as a presidential candidate last year the day after Trump imposed travel restrictions from several countries including China into the United States, “We are in the midst of a crisis with the coronavirus. We need to lead the way with science — not Donald Trump’s record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering. He is the worst possible person to lead our country through a global health emergency.”

Later that same day, Biden tweeted, “Trump further diminished the U.S. in the eyes of the world by expanding his travel ban. This new ‘African Ban,’ is designed to make it harder for black and brown people to immigrate to the United States. It’s a disgrace, and we cannot let him succeed.”

Many descended on this tweet and Twitter user “Chris Davis” asked, “So… what is it now that you’re doing the same thing?”

Biden later attempted to walk back the xenophobic comment and claimed during a debate that he was making a broad point about xenophobia and not directly referring to the travel ban, according to Fox News.

In March of 2020, however, Biden also tweeted, “A wall will not stop the coronavirus. Banning all travel from Europe — or any other part of the world — will not stop it. This disease could impact every nation and any person on the planet — and we need a plan to combat it.”

Vice President Kamala Harris also had weighed in on the “Africa ban” last year and called it “Un-American.”

“It is clearly driven by hate, not security,” Harris insisted at the time.
