Alec Baldwin broke down in tears as he recalled the moment Halyna Hutchins was shot, in a new interview.

The actor, 63, discharged a gun on the set of Rust in October, and accidentally shot the cinematographer.

Hutchins, 42, was airlifted to hospital in New Mexico but died from her injuries.

He sat down for a discussion with George Stephanopoulos for an Unscripted primetime special, which is airing on Thursday on ABC, and became emotional over the tragedy.

In a teaser for the interview, shared on the Good Morning America Twitter account, he said: ‘She was someone who was loved by everyone who worked with her, liked by everyone she worked with and admired.

‘Even now, I find it hard to believe that, it just doesn’t seem real to me.’

He was seen wiping away tears when asked how he ‘comes to terms’ with what happened on set.

Baldwin also said he didn’t point the gun at Hutchins and pull the trigger.

‘It wasn’t in the script for the trigger to be pulled,’ Stephanopoulos remarked, to which he replied: ‘Well the trigger wasn’t pulled, I did not pull the trigger.

‘No, no, no, no, no, I would never point a gun at anyone and pull a trigger at them, never.’

When asked if this is the ‘worst thing’ that has ever happened to him, he added: ‘Yes. Because I think back and I think of… what could I have done.’

The full interview will air on ABC tomorrow, at 8pm ET.

Stephanopoulos appeared on Good Morning America earlier in the day to discuss the chat, and described it as the most ‘intense’ interview he has ever done.

‘I’ve done thousands of interviews in the last twenty years at ABC. This was the most intense I’ve ever experienced,’ he told the panel.

‘So raw. As you can imagine he’s devastated, but he was also very candid, he was very forthcoming.

‘He answered every question, he talked about Halyna Hutchins, talked about meeting with her family as well.

‘[He] went through in detail what happened on the set that day, and I have to tell you I was surprised in many places over the course of that hour and twenty minutes we sat down yesterday.’

Baldwin has kept a low profile following the tragedy, but shared a statement in the days after Hutchins’ death, expressing his sadness at the incident.

‘There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours,’ he tweeted at the time.

‘I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family.

‘My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.’
