Chris Cuomo Has Been Suspended From CNN For Helping His Brother Andrew Cuomo With Sexual Harassment Allegations
Chris Cuomo has been indefinitely suspended from CNN where he’s hosted his show Cuomo Prime Time since 2017. The reason being that new documents revealed that Chris was way more involved in helping his brother, former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo, handle his sexual harassment scandal than Chris had previously said. Chris reacted to the news by going into the streets and yelling at the first stranger he came upon. Just kidding, but I would avoid being behind him at a check-out line for a few days.
Andrew Cuomo was investigated for a variety of sexual misconduct allegations this year, which eventually led to him resigning as governor. During that time, Chris said that he never tried to influence CNN’s coverage of it, but he did say that he spoke with his brother and gave him his “take” but he was “not an advisor” to him but “a brother.” He also denied reaching out to other journalists to find out about new stories which may have been coming out about his brother. CNN allowed him to continue anchoring his show, Cuomo Primetime, which is usually their biggest ratings hit. But after new documents were released about the investigation into Andrew’s scandal, CNN put Chris on timeout and Anderson Cooper 360º went on for two hours instead of one yesterday. Anderson’s show usually airs before Chris’.
New York Attorney General, Letitia James, released the documents on Monday which include text messages and transcripts of interviews from the probe into the sexual misconduct allegations, and it doesn’t look good for Chris.
The cache of documents included text messages between Chris Cuomo and Melissa DeRosa, a then-top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, that suggested he was instrumental in working to craft a defense against a flood of sexual misconduct allegations. The text messages also revealed that Chris Cuomo sought to use his connections in the press to help prepare the then-governor’s team as accusers started to make their stories public. Chris Cuomo also acknowledged to investigators that he did attempt to learn more about a story by journalist Ronan Farrow. The anchor defended the practice as conventional. “The idea of one reporter calling another to find out about what’s coming down the pipe is completely business-as-usual,” he said.
The documents also show that Chris shared research on some of the accusers’ lives while denying he was doing such a thing publicly. By yesterday evening, Chris was suspended. Once the news went public, “an emotional” Chris reportedly met with the show’s staff to talk to them. I think they mean sad and not angry, but with him, you never know. A CNN spokesperson said:
“The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense… The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions… When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly. But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second. However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew. As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
Charlotte Bennett, who was an aide to Andrew Cuomo and accused him of sexual harassment in February, was one of the people Chris did research on. She took to Twitter to post a statement which asked that CNN “immediately take action,” and that “anything short of firing Chris Cuomo reflects a network lacking both morals and a backbone.” Here’s her full statement:

A spokesperson for Andrew Cuomo, Rich Azzopardi, shat on the release of the documents and called it a “manipulated release.”
“New Yorkers are no one’s fool and James and her colleagues’ obvious misuse of government resources to damage political opponents is as obvious and repugnant as it is unethical and illegal.”
Well, if CNN does fire Chris, they can make things nice with Kathy Griffin after they fired her as Anderson Cooper’s New Year’s Eve co-host for that Trump pic. They can give Chris’ spot to Kathy. It would be worth it solely for the side-eyes that Kathy would throw to Anderson when he passes the on-air torch to her between their shows.
