Thierry Henry admits he could not understand why Mikel Arteta took off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United.

The Gunners suffered a 3-2 loss at Old Trafford despite taking the lead against the home side courtesy of Emile Smith Rowe.

Arsenal went onto find themselves behind after a Bruno Fernandes strike and a Cristiano Ronaldo brace but kept battling to find an equaliser until the end.

However, they did so without captain Aubameyang, who was taking off on 79 minutes for Alexandre Lacazette.

Smith Rowe was also replaced with 20 minutes to go for Bukayo Saka despite being one of Arsenal’s most threatening players throughout.

But Gunners legend Henry could not understand Arteta’s reasoning for benching Aubameyang with his team looking for a crucial goal.

‘One thing I couldn’t understand is Aubameyang is your captain, he’s your goalscorer, you put him as the captain,’ he said on Amazon Prime.

‘Twenty minutes to go, you’re losing 3-2 and you take him off.

‘I’ve never came across this situation where you’re 3-2 away from home and you need a goal and you take your captain off the field and you know he can score you goals.

‘So something is not right there.

‘I don’t mind if you take [him] off, if you know what the situation was kind of a bit different but that’s your go-to player, your talisman.

‘You made him captain, he’s your goalscorer. 3-2 you have to score a goal and you take him off.

‘He [Arteta] has all the right in the world to take him off but what I’m trying to say is if I was not the striker, the captain and the guy that’s supposed to score goals, you’re losing away from home… I’ll be going on the bench “Ok hang on a minute, I’m not playing well but that shows also do they still trust me?”

‘There was something that was weird for me right there.’

Aubameyang has netted just four league goals for the Gunners this season.
