Moderate Republicans Are Witnessing the GOP Rapidly Spinning Out of Control

After Trump’s loss to Biden and a year of inner turmoil, all eyes are on the GOP with many moderate Republicans fearing disaster if the party stays in the hands of the far right.

Centrists within the Republican party worry – rightly so – that the party is aligning itself with insurrectionists and conspiracy theorists. They believe that if the GOP continues down this path, it becomes less and less appealing to the masses.

It is clear that the GOP activist base is still backing Trump, which alienates those in the party who have turned away from him.

One example of the party’s struggle is the current situation with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and what exactly they will do about her. Greene has been a staunch supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory and has encouraged social media posts calling for the execution of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Equally as shocking is the video that has emerged of Greene openly taunting and berating David Hogg, who is a survivor of the 2018 Parkland, Fla. high school massacre. Hogg is also an outspoken gun control activist now.

A spokeswoman for Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), who has been vocal in his disdain for QAnon, released a statement of his criticism of Greene that said, “Rep. Greene’s continued perpetuation of conspiracy theories, lies, and vitriol is frankly unacceptable. And it is not compatible with the integrity of the institution nor the principles of the party — the Republican Party that Congressman Kinzinger belongs to.”

Greene continues to defend herself. She said in a statement, “Democrats and their spokesmen in the Fake News Media will stop at nothing to defeat conservative Republicans.”

As tensions mount from struggles like this, the Capitol insurrection, and Trump’s impeachment trial, the party is as divided as ever.

Brendan Steinhauser, a Texas-based GOP consultant, said, “A lot of us miss the old days of battling over ideas. Now it is something completely different — trying to convince people that these QAnon people are crazy and illegitimate and all the other things.”

Steinhauser added, “It’s bleak, and it is going to take some leadership, from people who are running for president [in 2024] to people in Congress, to step up and say this.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) criticized House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, saying, “There are no consequences in the Republican caucus for violence, there is no consequence for racism, no consequences for misogyny, no consequences for insurrection. And ‘no consequences’ mean that they condone it.”

Rick Tyler is a Trump critic who served as communications director for Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) 2016 presidential campaign, agreed with her, saying, “There are a lot of [Ocasio-Cortez’s] policies I disagree with. But Taylor Greene? She’s insane.”

Tyler believes the party began to fall apart with Trump’s win in the 2016 Republican presidential primary and is now reaching the breaking point. .

He said, “The Republican Party will lose general elections, lose Senate seats, lose governorships — but they will continue to send nutcases like Taylor Greene to Congress because they will win red districts. Then that will become a self-fulfilling prophesy, making the party more and more radicalized until people won’t stand for it anymore.”

Doug Heye, a former communications director for the RNC said, “If you don’t win your primary, you have no November.”

Heye said, “Republicans can only fix this if they want to. And right now it appears they don’t want to, given their warm embrace of Trump and everything that came with that.”
