Rep. Matt Gaetz Wants Trump to Be House Speaker

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) wants Trump to be House Speaker

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said on Tuesday that if Republicans take back the House of Representatives in 2022 he wants former President Donald Trump to be Speaker.

“If you do retake the House, would you want ex-President Trump to be the Speaker,” Gaetz was asked during a press conference at the Capitol.

“I would,” responded Gaetz.

“Have you talked to him about it,” asked the reporter.

“I have,” replied Gaetz.

“And what did he say,” asked the reporter.

“I keep my conversations with the former president between the two of us,” said Gaetz.

Last month, former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows also suggested that Trump should be Speaker were the GOP to take back the House. Meadows explained (which is true, although unprecedented) that to be elected Speaker of the House a person does not need to be a sitting member of Congress.

Earlier this year, an outgoing spokesperson for Trump said the former president has “zero desire” to be Speaker, while Trump himself has called the idea “very interesting.”
