Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke says the club are keen to hold talks with Erling Haaland in the coming weeks, but admits the striker holds the key and the decision is ultimately in his hands.

Haaland, 21, has established himself as one of the finest attacking players in European football over the last two years, scoring 74 goals in 72 appearances for Dortmund.

Remarkably, Haaland’s brace against Besiktas on Tuesday night was his fifth of of the season in all competitions and the Norwegian’s stock continues to rise amid strong interest from the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Dortmund managed to fend off Europe’s elite and convinced Haaland to stay on for a further 12 months last summer. But BVB know they face a serious fight to keep hold of their prized possession for next term.

However, the Bundesliga outfit are not panicking about the situation given the forward still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract at the Westfalenstadion.

‘I think we will speak in the next few weeks,’ Dortmund CEO Watzke told Amazon Prime following the side’s 5-0 victory over Besiktas in the Champions League.

‘We are not alone in control of this. We are a bit dependent on signals coming from him and his advisor.

‘We have no pressure to negotiate because we don’t necessarily have to extend the contract.’

Haaland has a release clause in his contract at Dortmund which could allow the Norway international to leave for a fee of £63m.

Watzke added: ‘The question is: does he trigger the clause or does he not?

‘But we will try not to find out until March or April.’

Recent reports in Germany claimed Ralf Rangnick would receive a €10million (£8.5m) bonus at Manchester United if he managed to coax Haaland to Old Trafford.

However, the newly-appointed United interim manager made sure to distance himself from these ‘nonsense’ rumours at his opening press conference last week.

Asked whether a Haaland-related bonus exists in his deal, Rangnick told reporters:  ‘Let me have a look… €10m for Erling Haaland, €10m for Kylian Mbappe, €10m for Robert Lewandowski, €10m for Joshua Kimmich… this is nonsense obviously, there are no such clauses in my contract.

‘As I said, it doesn’t make sense now to have any sort of speculation on possible new players.

‘Erling Haaland is a fantastic striker. I know best myself because I was together with the people at Red Bull Salzburg at the time with my friend Christoph Freund [Salzburg’s sporting director] and the people there, I was also a little bit involved in the move from Molde to Salzburg.

‘Therefore I know what kind of player he is. In the meantime the whole world has realised how good the player he is. Two years ago it was only very few people who probably believed in this kind of development.

‘As I said, it doesn’t make sense. I’m more than happy [with the squad]. The offensive strike power we have here, all of the offensive players we have here, quite a few of them didn’t play yesterday [against Arsenal] – Anthony Martial only came on in the last five minutes, Mason [Greenwood] didn’t play at all.

‘We have so many top players in the offensive department that we don’t need to speak about any other players.’
