Chelsea are considering rivalling Barcelona for the signing of Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski, with Thomas Tuchel desperate to add more firepower to his attack.

The Blues started the season with hopes of mounting a title challenge but Liverpool and Manchester City quickly pulled away from Tuchel’s side.

Romelu Lukaku was signed for a club record fee of £97million last summer but he’s managed just eight league goals this season and the Blues are open to offers for the Belgian.

Mason Mount is the only Chelsea player that’s managed double figures this term and Tuchel feels that the side’s lack of goals has cost them dearly.

The German therefore feels that the club have two options; either to squeeze more out of the squad that is currently there or to add more firepower in attack.

‘If we stick to the group then we will try to solve it with these players,’ said Tuchel

‘Is it necessary to bring more offensive players around the box to create more distractions, to create more space for each other? We will ask that question. Can we do better in the structure? Can we push the players more? Did we rotate too much? Let’s see.

‘There are a lot of options. The numbers we produce from our offensive players don’t allow us to overperform and we need overperformance if we want to be nearer to the top two teams.

‘I am not pointing fingers, I am not blaming anybody, but we need overperformance from everybody. It’s not overperformance if we have only single figures in scoring and assisting.’

The Guardian claim Lewandowski is now a serious option for the Blues, with the board considering challenging for his signature.

The Pole has a year to run on his deal at Bayern Munich but he appeared to say goodbye to supporters at the Allianz Arena last week.

The former Dortmund ace is keen on joining Barcelona but it remains to be seen whether the Catalans can afford the Pole’s salary, particularly given their financial troubles.
