Cheney reelection video ignores inflation, domestic energy production curbs under Biden

Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney rolled out a reelection campaign announcement video that leaves out issues like record inflation and curbs on domestic oil and gas production under the Biden administration.

Cheney, who supported former President Donald Trump’s impeachment, is trailing attorney Harriet Hageman by 30 points in the primary race to retain her seat, according to a recent poll commissioned by the Club for Growth, which opposes her reelection. The GOP primary is on Aug. 16.

Hageman has been endorsed by Trump, who is scheduled to headline a rally for Hageman Saturday.

“Some things have to matter,” says Cheney in the announcement video, which portrays her as an unswerving guardian of bedrock American political ideals under threat from unspecified quarters. “American freedom, the rule of law, our founding principles, the foundations of our republic matter. What we do in this election in Wyoming matters.”

Cheney was censured by the Wyoming GOP after she voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. She doesn’t mention Trump by name in the announcement video.

“As we work together to fight for Wyoming, and the issues that matter to us, there are some things you can count on,” she said. “When I know something is wrong, I will say so. I won’t waver or back down. I won’t surrender to pressure or intimidation. I know where to draw the line.”

A recent FiveThirtyEight poll found inflation as the top concern among the American public.

Wyoming ranks 8th in the U.S. for oil production.

House Republican leaders such as California Rep. Kevin McCarthy and New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, GOP conference chair, frequently mention record inflation, the border crisis and gas prices as critiques of the Biden administration and the Democratic Party. These issues were not included in Cheney’s ad.
