Vice President Kamala Harris called for an assault weapons ban on Saturday after attending the funeral of the eldest victim of the Buffalo supermarket mass shooting.

“There’s a through line to what happened here in Texas, in Atlanta, in Orlando, what happened at the synagogues…this is a moment that requires all good people who are loving people to just say we will not stand for this. Enough is enough,” Harris said in remarks at the funeral for Ruth Whitfield, 86, who died during the racist-motivated May 14 mass shooting at a Tops Friendly Markets store.

Harris was reluctant to deliver an address, but did so at the urging of Rev. Al Sharpton.

While speaking to reporters after the funeral, which took place just days after the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Harris argued that “everybody’s got to stand up and agree that this should not be happening in our country” before calling for an assaults weapon ban, according to the Guardian.

“We are not sitting around, waiting to figure out what the solution looks like,” she said, later calling on Congress to act. “We know what works on this. It includes – let’s have an assault weapons ban.”

“An assault weapon is a weapon of war with no place in a civil society,” she added.

Harris then called for universal background checks for gun purchases, saying that no one should “be able to buy a weapon that can kill other human beings without at least knowing, ‘Hey, has that person committed a violent crime before? Are they are a threat against themselves or others?””
