Emma Willis sent a Christmas hamper to Kate Garraway to help out over Christmas.

The Good Morning Britain presenter – whose husband Derek Draper has been in hospital since contracting Covid-19 a year ago – has opened up on a tough time which was made worse when her family car and a subsequent loan vehicle were both stolen.

Then, the fridge-freezer broke, and on the day the replacement turned up, the whole house flooded and the heating failed, with Kate unable to get to the shops or find an available online delivery slot.

Speaking to The Times, the 53-year-old star revealed how Emma Willis – whom she shares an agent with – caught wind of the situation and used her role with Marks & Spencer to help out.

Kate added: ‘They sent over a hamper of Christmas goodies. So we had this extraordinary situation where we didn’t have any bread but we had canapés.

‘The kids would ask, “What’s for breakfast?” “Canapés.” “Can’t we have Rice Krispies?” “No — we don’t have any. But you can have truffles!” ‘

Childcare has been difficult for the mum-of-two, as she shared the duties with Derek before he fell ill – and she while she eventually hired a nanny last autumn, they’re now on compassionate leave after a Covid family bereavement over Christmas.

However, she’s had friends to help, and former Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle’s backup singer has been taking care of the kids –  Darcey, 15, and son Billy, 11 – while she’s off work with the live music industry on hold.

‘She’s so lovely and so brilliant,’ Kate added. ‘And you know, when I get home tonight they will have been mixing a rap. A really inappropriate rap.’

She has also had to think about what the future could hold for Derek’s quality of life as his body tries to recover from Covid-19 and overcome a number of complications including infections, kidney failure and damage to his liver and pancreas.

Derek was first hospitalised in March 2020 and was placed into a medically-induced coma.

While he is now coronavirus free, his body is battling multiple complications because of the virus and Kate was warned multiple times that Derek may not make it.

At one point, she was even left waiting for 24 hours after mistakenly being told Derek might have died.

At the end of last year, Derek’s condition had improved and he was able to breathe naturally, he was off kidney dialysis and was able to to recognise people he knew and have brief conversations.

Throughout Derek’s hospitalisation Kate has been working on an ITV documentary to share her family’s experience. She has also penned a book The Power of Hope that is set for release in April.
