It’s Doubtful the Former President Will Be Able to Get Back on Social Media

Donald Trump was banned from both Facebook and Twitter following his insurrection and it doesn’t look like he has much of a chance at getting back on the sites.

Social media, especially Twitter, was very important to Donald Trump’s political career. And the site gave him a lot of leeway. Trump regularly defied Twitter’s terms and conditions during his presidency.

Facebook was kind to Trump in other ways. Mark Zuckerberg’s site allowed “fake news” to run rampant in the run-up to the 2016 election. And this fake news was very helpful to Trump.

But once a mob of Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol, the two sites banned the former President indefinitely. The former guy is now resigned to calling in to Fox News shows to get his message across.

Facebook’s board will meet next week to decide if they will overturn Facebook’ ban. And the board has the final absolute say in the decision. Politico, though, does not think the president will be allowed back on the site.

Cristiano Lima reports, “Trump spent years butting heads with Facebook over its standards, including posts before and after the election that the company either adorned with warning labels or took down entirely for making unfounded claims about the election or the coronavirus pandemic.”

And Evelyn Douek, a lecturer at Harvard Law School, weighed in, “There have been years of battle between Facebook and years of contestation around Trump’s presence on the platform, and it absolutely can’t be said that he didn’t have an idea that he was breaching Facebook’s policies.”
