A teenage boy, 17, has died after a car crashed into a taxi while being chased by police

Officers pursued a Ford Focus after the car ‘ran a red light and the driver didn’t stop for them’, Greater Manchester Police said.

The vehicle crashed into a taxi at 3.45am on March 31, in Chorlton, Manchester

Firefighters had to use cutting gear to free three people from the wreckage.

Two passengers, a boy, 17, and a man, 18, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 17-year-old died on Tuesday, police confirmed today. The 18-year-old is still in hospital in a critical, but non-life threatening condition.

A man, 19, was arrested for causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police and failing to stop after a road accident. He has been released while under investigation

A witness told the Manchester Evening News they saw someone being chased by police down an alley just after the crash at around 3.45am.

Greater Manchester Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) which will investigate the circumstances.

Chief Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the family of the boy who has sadly lost his life, and all those affected by this incident.

‘We are fully cooperating with the independent investigation by the IOPC, and it will therefore not be appropriate to comment any further at this time.’
