What Trump Did is ‘A Line that Cannot Be Crossed’

As previously noted, despite the fact that Liz Cheney’s policy beliefs remain 100% at odds with the progressive left, she is most certainly a friend of the progressive left at this point in time. If this country loses its democracy, there won’t be any forum to put our policy ideas up against those of Liz Cheney and she knows it. The bottom line is that Liz Cheney would prefer to debate policy with us in a democracy rather than having her conservative views imposed upon us by a wanna-be dictator like Trump.

She has been on fire lately and especially now that some of her statements made in private have been leaked. From CNN:

“We can’t embrace the notion the election is stolen. It’s a poison in the bloodstream of our democracy,” Cheney said, speaking behind closed doors at a conference in Sea Island, Georgia. “We can’t whitewash what happened on January 6 or perpetuate Trump’s big lie. It is a threat to democracy. What he did on January 6 is a line that cannot be crossed.”

Cheney made her comments, confirmed to CNN by two people in the room, during an off-the-record interview with former House Speaker Paul Ryan before a crowd of donors and scholars at the annual retreat for the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.

So the comments were made during a private conference and not to the public? The fact that she blasted her beliefs at this particular private retreat is actually more valuable than stating them in public, especially since she had to know that they would leak eventually.

Cheney is also continuing to defend democracy despite the fact that she knows the MAGA GQP will punish her. A hallmark of fascist dictatorships is the punishment of any dissent and thus she will certainly be punished:

When Cheney easily survived the vote in February, McCarthy came to her defense and called on the House GOP conference to keep her in the spot in a speech delivered behind closed doors. This time, however, could be different. A House GOP source who has been in contact with McCarthy said the GOP leader has been “furious” at her for weeks amid her comments about Trump.

Some of the cooler kids on the progressive left will refuse to embrace or respect Cheney’s efforts because she’s a Cheney and deeply conservative. It is a mistake. Everyone should support her in the fight for democracy. We can only hope that there will be plenty of time later to shout at her in policy disagreements. For now, there is only one ultimate policy issue with the MAGAs, democracy or fascism.

Peace, y’all
