Jose Mourinho has reportedly placed Manchester United flop Donny van de Beek on his transfer wish list as he takes over at Roma this summer.

The Dutch midfielder arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax for £40m last summer but has failed to make much impact at all in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old has been afforded just two Premier League starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and 14 appearances off the bench.

He scored on his debut for club but has not netted since then in any competition as he finds himself way down the pecking order in central midfield, behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Fred, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic.

Mourinho is looking to offer the Netherlands international an escape route to Serie A, with CalcioMercato reporting that Roma are willing to make an offer of €30m (£26m) for the out-of-favour midfielder.

The Sun have reported that Ajax are also keen to re-sign their former star, but that Manchester United are not looking to accept offers for Van de Beek, believing that he still has an important role to play in the squad going forward.

Paul Pogba is heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer with his contract expiring in 2022 and if a new deal isn’t forthcoming then the Red Devils will look to cash in at the end of this season.

Juan Mata is also out of contract at the end of this campaign, meaning Van de Beek could naturally move up the pecking order under Solskjaer.

Last month Solskjaer hinted at a much bigger role for Van de Beek after returning from a successful international break with the Netherlands, but it has not really come to fruition.

‘He’s come back and, in training this morning, he scored some absolute top, top goals that I’d be really proud of myself. It’s done him the world of good going away, scoring a goal for Holland,’ Solskjaer said in April.

‘We hope we can see a lot of that for the next seven or eight weeks of the season and then to kick on again.’
