The vice president is in Guatemala and Mexico for two days of meetings and talks with officials about the overwhelming level of migration from Central America. It is Harris’ first trip overseas as vice president. President Joe Biden has tasked her with overseeing the US border crisis and determining ways to stem the tide of migrants.
CBS News recently interviewed Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei ahead of Harris’ visit. He described her as “frank” and as someone “who doesn’t hold back, which is good.” But he added that they clearly disagree on how to solve the migrant crisis.
“We are not on the same side of the coin,” Giammattei said. “We are in agreement on the ‘what’ [of the crisis], which is something. We are not in agreement on the ‘how.’”
Giammattei believes the Biden administration is sending a message that appears to encourage more Central Americans to migrate and enter the US illegally, which is fueling an ostensible human trafficking spike in Guatemala.
“The message changed to, ‘We are going to reunite families and we are going to reunite children,’” he said. “The very next day the coyotes here were organizing groups of children to take them to the United States.”
