Michelle Williams is not going to allow for any Destiny’s Child slander on the timeline after social media users have been debating over the lyrics of the group’s hit track, Cater 2 U.

For those who don’t know, Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle released the single in 2004 and it became an instant classic.

The lyrics saw the iconic trio singing about a woman’s total devotion to her man and the ways she would make sure all of his needs were met at home.

17 years later, new listeners on Twitter decided to weigh in on the lyrics and the message of the song as many pointed out that they wouldn’t be willing to do so much for a man.

The commentary started off as a playful joke, however it soon led to an intense debate about the single.

Sunday saw Michelle take to Instagram to share her thoughts about the backlash, commenting in a playful nature as a character called Merleen.

She captioned the video clip: ‘I know it was all jokes but Merleen still wants to add her commentary!! ‘

In the video, the 41-year-old joked: ‘My name is Marleen, and I just read that y’all wanna cancel the song “Cater 2 U” by Destiny’s Child.

‘Oh, honey, you didn’t discern who you were catering to, and you gave your lil pearls to swine, don’t be mad at Destiny’s Child. Uh uh!’

Explaining her statement further in the comment, she added: ‘If you say that someone is casting pearls before swine, you mean that they are wasting their time by offering something that is helpful or valuable to someone who does not appreciate or understand it.’

Indeed, fans had been questioning the ‘problematic’ lyrics including the line, ‘my life would be purposeless without you’.

Some Twitter even went as far as the state the song was akin to slavery because of everything the woman was promising to do for her man.

However, many DC3 fans hit back and argued that the song could never be canceled while others highlighted that perhaps people were not catering to the right man.

We guess fans will just have to agree to disagree about this one.
