FKA Twigs And Shia LaBeouf Are Working Towards Settling Her Domestic Abuse Lawsuit

Last December, FKA Twigs filed a lawsuit against her former partner Shia LaBeouf, and in it, she gave us a little slice of what it was like for her to date Shia, which is to say: it was (allegedly) a terrible time for her. Twigs came through with numerous, and I mean numerous, examples of Shia’s alleged abuse, which included allegations of manipulation, controlling and jealous behavior, physical abuse, and violence. Shia, through his lawyers, denied every one of FKA Twigs’ claims in her lawsuit. Both sides are reportedly trying to keep the case from going to trial and are now negotiating a settlement.

According to The New York Daily News (via NME), a remote hearing was held in front of a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge earlier this week (remote, because of COVID, of course). FKA Twigs’ lawyer Sean Hardy says that both sides have been in “productive settlement negotiations” and are on track for arranging an “early mediation.” But just in case Shia and Twigs can’t come to a settlement agreement, the judge has penciled them both in for a follow-up court date on December 15th, 2021. If they haven’t agreed to a settlement deal by then, the case will go to trial. The judge stated that they would likely get a trial date set for sometime in 2023. FKA Twigs is currently living in the UK, but her lawyer said she’d be happy to return to the US for a trial, as she’s not backing down from her claims of domestic violence.

FKA Twigs is seeking damages because she claimed that Shia had isolated her in the US, which cut her off from several of her music industry contacts in the UK. It also reportedly took her a long time to finally work up the courage and leave, which she says was a very expensive endeavor. But, as she stated back in December when she first filed her lawsuit, she plans on donating a “significant” portion of any damages awarded to her to a domestic violence charity. According to a statement from her lawyer from June 3rd, she also needs some money for lingering health issues that were allegedly caused by Shia’s violence:

“On multiple occasions, defendant physically battered plaintiff, inflicting serious bodily harm and severe emotional distress,” he said. “Defendant sexually battered plaintiff, by knowingly transmitting an incurable disease without plaintiff’s prior knowledge or consent.” He said Barnett “requires ongoing medical and psychotherapeutic treatment for her injuries, which are permanent.”

“Plaintiff will seek substantial damages, in an amount to be proven at the time of a trial by jury, but well beyond the minimum jurisdiction of this court,” he wrote.

It sounds like things are being handled in a much healthier way than they were previously. After Twigs filed her lawsuit, Shia’s lawyer released a statement of denial on his behalf, and then accused Twigs and her lawyer of playing musical meditations, and canceling/moving their mediation dates around, which was allegedly a headache for Shia’s wallet. Shia entered a rehabilitation center back in January, to deal with his issues. Shia is out of rehab and was currently seen on a bike ride with his ex-wife, Mia Goth.

I don’t understand how Shia and his lawyer aren’t just agreeing to everything FKA Twigs and her lawyer are asking for, settlement-wise. Does Shia want to be known as a guy who would nickel and dime a woman who accused him of roughly one million ways of being an abusive boyfriend? On top of everything else? A pile in which starring in the 20% rotten Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is one of the better points?
