Add one more area to the sectors of America currently battling it out over race in education.
In Washington D.C., a new bill takes aim at Critical Race Theory.
As reported by The Washington Free Beacon, on Wednesday, Republican Wisconsin Rep. Glenn Grothman introduced the Ending Critical Race Theory in D.C. Public Schools Act.
Effectively, the legislation would prevent public schools in the area from hosting antiracism sessions.
It would keep out of the classroom any teaching that people of a certain racial background are responsible for sings against other groups.
Additionally, it would bar lessons presenting that nation as “fundamentally racist or sexist.”
Among other points pummeled:
- One race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex.
- An individual, by virtue of his or her race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.
- An individual should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment solely or partly because of his or her race or sex.
- Meritocracy or traits such as a hard work ethic are racist or sexist, or were created by a particular race to oppress another.
As for “sessions,” these are where teachers or students may be asked to admit their racism.
Also gleaned: “Folx who do not benefit from their social identities, who are in the subordinate culture, have little to no privilege and power.”
More from the book:
“A white, cisgender man, who is able-bodied, heterosexual, considered handsome and speaks English has more privilege than a Black transgender woman.”
And sometimes, individuals are a Frankenstein of social chaos:
“There are parts of us that hold some power and other parts that are oppressed.”
Christopher lays out what happened next:
[T]he teacher had the students deconstruct their own intersectional identities and “circle the identities that hold power and privilege” on their identity maps, ranking their traits according to the hierarchy. In a related assignment, the students were asked to write short essays describing which aspects of their identities “hold power and privilege” and which do not. The students were expected to produce “at least one full page of writing.” As an example, the presentation included a short paragraph about transgenderism and nonbinary sexuality.
One parent from that situation marveled, “They were basically teaching racism to my eight-year-old.”
CRT is one of culture’s currently cresting waves, but some states are attempting to turn the tide.
In Arkansas, Oklahoma, Idaho, and Florida, it’s been banned.
In all, at least 21 states have introduced measures to ban or limit CRT.
Back to D.C., here’s another portion of the bill:
No employee of the District of Columbia Public Schools or the District of Columbia Public 9 Charter Schools shall compel a teacher or student to adopt, affirm, adhere to, or profess ideas that promote race or sex stereotyping or scapegoating.
Rep. Glenn told the Free Beacon, “My heart goes out to any children who have the misfortune of attending the District of Columbia schools. Objective statistics show the District of Columbia having the second highest spending per student in the country, while having either the lowest or second lowest reading and math scores in the country. So while the kids can’t read and kids can’t add, they’ll sure be able to spout Marxist, America-hating rhetoric.”
