Yesterday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that she would be rejecting two of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) nominees for the upcoming January 6th insurrection select committee. The two Republicans, Congressmen Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN), are hardcore far-right hacks who McCarthy clearly nominated in the hopes that they would waylay the insurrection probe and turn the proceedings into a partisan circus.

The fact that McCarthy nominated someone of such low moral character as Jim Jordan—a man infamous for ignoring rampant sexual abuse during his time as an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University—demonstrates how unseriously he takes the investigation into January 6th.

After Pelosi shot down his nominees and offered up suitable Republican replacements, McCarthy stated that unless she backpedals, the GOP will not be taking part in the proceedings and will instead launch its own “investigation” into the facts. Such an “investigation” if it occurs will invariably devolve into a concerted effort to obfuscate any role the Republican Party and specifically Donald Trump played in inciting the uprising.

Today, Pelosi made it clear that she will not be backing down on this issue. During a press conference, the Speaker explained that the select committee is moving forward in a bipartisan fashion and that its only objective is to find out the truth. She hit the Republicans for obsessing over the Trump element in all of these affairs and explained her nominee rejections.

“So as the legislation allows, I didn’t accept two of the five people who were appointed,” said Pelosi. “They had made statements and taken actions that I think would impact the integrity of the committee, the work of the committee. This is deadly serious. This is about our Constitution, it’s about our country, it’s about an assault on the Capitol that is being mischaracterized for some reason at the expense of finding the truth for the American people.”
