Coming off from securing her first Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress, Hamilton star Phillipa Soo has officially been tapped for a series regular role opposite Elisabeth Moss in Apple TV+’s forthcoming series adaptation of Shining Girls. Soo is set to portray the role of Jin-Sook, a character described as an intelligent and sure-footed woman who works in the research department at the Adler Planetarium. Soo will also next be seen in Hulu’s forthcoming limited series Dopesick.
Based on Lauren Beukes’ best-selling novel, Shining Girls centers around a drifter named Harper Curtis in Depression-era Chicago as he finds a key to a house that opens to various points in time, but in order to travel he must kill bright young women who burn with potential known as “shining girls.” After stalking them through their different eras, he meets his match in 1989 when one of his victims, Kirby Mazrachi, survives and begins hunting him back.
The series adaptation will be led by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Kirby, a Chicago reporter who survived a brutal assault only to find her reality shifting as she hunts down her attacker. Joining her are Jamie Bell (Rocketman) as Harper, and Wagner Moura (Narcos) as Dan.
Shining Girls will be written and executive produced by Silka Luis, who is also set as the showrunner. The long-in-development project will be executive produced by Moss and Lindsey McManus through their Love & Squalor banner along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davidson for Appian Way. It is a production by MRC Television, with Beukes and Alan Page Arriaga also attached to executive produce.
