It was a day of mixed emotions for Newcastle United duo Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar on Thursday.
Schar’s Swiss side took on Cameroon in the early kick off yesterday, however our in-form centre-back was left out of the starting 11 and played no part in their 1-0 win over the African giants. So, a good result for his country, but a bittersweet moment to miss out in what promises to be his last World Cup.
The same was true for Guimaraes. Somehow, Lucas Paqueta – a good friend of Bruno’s who has struggled at West Ham since arriving in England – beat him to a place alongside Casemiro against a Serbia side featuring former Mag Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Brazil ran out 2-0 winners in the end thanks to a brilliant second-half brace from Richarlison, yet Bruno also failed to feature, with Toon fans on social media baffled to see Manchester United’s out of favour Fred replace Paqueta in the closing stages.
Both watched their countries come away with big wins on Thursday, leaving them first and second in Group G, but they’ll be hoping for game time when Brazil face Switzerland at 4pm on Monday!
